Hi there, I received stafford loans about 25 years ago and due to health issues for me, I was unable to pay all of the loans back. If you have a disability (I have a disability), you can have the loans forgiven. I did. I also have returned to school just over two years ago. My financial aid officer assisted me with information on what I needed to do to get subsidized/unsubsidized Stafford loans in addition to the Pell Grants. I had to sign and have notarized a contract that I will pay this loans back. By doing this, you also become eligible to seek Federal, State, and other grants. I hope that this helps you. Rose

You aren't eligible to get a federal pell grant (or any other federal financial aid like Pell, work study etc) if you have a defaulted student loan. So if the loan is in default, then no, you can't get a Federal Pell grant or state grant.

Question: If I apply for a stafford loan for community college?
I had one loan from two semesters ago. I am still paying it off about 300 left. Ok right now I have missed this months payment on this loan. I applied for a stafford loan earlier this month. Given that I have missed this months payment for this month will they still grant me the new loan? what does default mean in this context?

From CottonCandy: If it is in default then they will not.

If you just missed one payment on a current loan then no you will not get denied. Default means you have missed quite a few payments for a consistent amount of time. Don't forget to ask to have your loan deferred once you get in school so you don't have to make payments on it.

Question: What are the stafford loan borrowing limits?
I know for undergrads it is 23,000. But what if you have still not completed your undergraduate and your parents are not approved for a parent loan? Is it automatically then the 40 or so K, or do you have to be 24 year old, and then you could get the extra you need? I heard from someone that the 40K is either if you are independent or if your parents are denied a parent plus loan or whatever and you are 24? Is this true? Because I don't see why there would be an or there if independents have to be 24 as one of the requirements to be independent among other possibilities anyway.

If you are a dependent student (under 24 generally) the ...
If you are a dependent student (under 24 generally) the limit is $23,000 If you are an independent the limit goes up to $46,000 Look at the chart on page 11 for more details. There is also a section on how you can get a plus if parents aren't eligible.

For subsidized Stafford Loans, you must have financial need as determined by your schoolbe sure to include the school's FAFSA code (or prospective schools, if you are a high school student) to ensure that the results are sent to your school's financial aid office.

If your parents are denied a PLUS loan you are eligible for extra Stafford $$, no matter what your age. I am not sure if it adds up to the 40k figure, but you don't need to be 24. My mom was denied, so I got to take out extra money and I was only 20. The thing is that it will be Unsubsidized Stafford I think, that is what I got. Maybe go into your financial aid office at school. They will be able to tell you the exact maximum, etc. edit- I think it was an extra 4-5 k per year of Unsubsidized Stafford depending on what year you were (juniors/seniors got more), so that probably does add up to 40k. Both parents need to be denied for the PLUS loan though, if they are on your FAFSA.

Question: Stafford Loan Inquiry?
This is first time applying for a stafford loan. I sent in all the required forms to the financial aid office. I think I may have made a mistake. Was I supposed to apply online with Chase for a stafford loan before I selected them as lender on loan agreement form?

Generally, your information should be sent electronically ...
Generally, your information should be sent electronically from your financial aid office. You can contact Chase to see if they have received your application. Keep ni mind that your school may only send once a week so it could very well me on its way and not loaded into their system. I would contact your FAO (hard to get them on the phone I know) and ask thewm if ther eis anything else you need to complete. Check to see when the loan application was/will be sent to Chase. Also ask them when the first portion of your loan will be disbursed and to what account. Good luck!

Question: Student Federal Stafford?
Hello friends, Does anyone know the current interest rate for the Student Federal Stafford Loan? I am looking to study for a master's degree and would need to take out a loan. Currently I do have a home equity line of credit at an interest rate of about 8% and would be enough for the master's degree for $50,000. Should I stick with home equity line of credit or better to open a loan from Federal Stafford? Thanks Brian

The interest rate on Stafford loans first disbursed ...
The interest rate on Stafford loans first disbursed beginning July 1, 2006 is fixed at 6.8%.
Also look into additional fees with the home equity loan. Stafford is not a credit based loan so you can certainly apply for it without the 'hit' on your credit report and get a good idea of what you're looking at that way. If you don't like it, you can walk away, no obligations or questions asked.
