Question: Financial Aid...HELP SOMEONE!!!?
For this year (freshman) Expected Family Contribution was "0" so I recieved full assistance. When I filled out FAFSA this past January for the upcoming 2008-2009 year, EFC was higher than the actual cost of tuition. My mom is a single parent and I'm her only dependent and she earned $27,000 last year. The only thing that changed is that I had a part-time job and I don't know if this is what made EFC become higher than actual tuition. Does this mean that I'm not going to get any financial assistance whatsoever?
My EFC is 3977. Tuition is about 2500.

You earning money can significantly increase your EFC. An EFC higher than your tuition doesn't mean you wont get enough fin aid to pay for it all, the efc is just a code the school uses to determine how much fin aid you'll get and which kinds... it's not what you have to pay the school. If your EFC is above 4000 or so you may not get a Pell grant again, if it is still below this, you will probably get a pell grant again, just not the full amount. If you post your EFC I can usually give a good guess of how much you'll get.
Good luck.

My daughter had a part time job and although we earned less than we ever have due to relocation to another city her EFC was higher. We spoke to her financial aid officer and I wound up writing a letter which explained our financial circumstances. The officer then wrote her a financial aid package which covered her expenses for school.
Try talking to the financial aid officer; more than likely you will probably receive something but who knows how much and most of it may be loans. To be sure sit down with the officer and have your mom go in with you they may be able to work something out.

If you applied for financial aid and got full coverage and later you receive a full scholarship. Would they try to take the scholarship away because I also got approved for financial aid? Of course I would prefer the scholarship! How does something like this work?

Of course not, you just need to provide your financial aid department that you will no longer be using their services... just remember that if they have already paid out on your behalf, you will need to start thoes payments right away.

Answer: Scholarship deadlines are WAY early... as in way before the ...
Scholarship deadlines are WAY early... as in way before the semester starts and before you or fin aid ever pays your bill so the chances of this happening are slim. A dept or scholarship dept isn't going to award you money halfway through the semester after your fin aid has been dispersed.
My advise would be to apply for fin aid as usual and apply for as many scholarships as you can.
There is a maximum amount you can receive in financial aid (financial aid is loans, grants and yes even scholarships) so OCCASIONALLY someone is over awarded... but be aware, the maximum amount is much more than simply the cost of your tuition, books and fees.
The most common thing to happen if you are completely maxed out on fin aid (very rare) is the school would reduce your student loan amount by that much. They would not reduce the amount of grants you would receive like Pell or your state program. Hope it helps.
Question: can financial aid cover off campus housing?
i just finished fafsa and Expected Family Contribution (EFC) =$0 will it cover the cost or at least part of the cost of living off campus? I know that student loans will but if I dont need to go that way I really dont want to. thanks try to help as much as you can
Answer: The most any student with an EFC of zero can receive in a ...
The most any student with an EFC of zero can receive in a Federal PELL grant is a little over $4000. It doesn't matter if you live on or off campus. Your school will have a budget in place for off-campus students. You will still be awarded any other Federal or State grants for which you are eligible, regardless of whether you live on or off-campus. All the money is sent directly to your school, anything not needed to cover your tuition and fees will be refunded to you to use for your off-campus expenses. The only type of aid that can be reduced because you live off-campus is institutional grants or scholarships (ones that are directly from your school.) Some colleges (especially private colleges) will offer higher institutional scholarships to students who live on campus, and once they move, they lower the scholarship. Just ask your financial aid office, they can let you know if you have any institutional scholarships that would be affected by living off-campus.
You need to check with your financial aid office to see exactly what amount is built into your budget for off-campus living expenses. For example, if your schools off-campus living budget includes 6000 a year for your living expenses, then with your left grant money and even loans, that is the most that you can receive in a refund, so if your actual off-campus expenses come up to 8000 a year, you cannot even receive loans to cover the extra 2000, you will have to cover that out of your pocket.
So you need to see how much your school allows a student for living of campus and then plan your rent, utilities, transportation, ect. around that amount. And don't forget to take in account groceries, or look at purchasing a campus meal plan. Also, ask your school when the distribute their refunds. Some schools do not distribute refund checks until a few weeks after school starts each semester, so that would mean you would have to make other arrangements to have your first months rent paid at the beginning of each semester.
Good luck!

The higher the EFC the less free money (grants) that you will be able to get. I have a EFC of 0 and I have no out of pocket costs for school. EFC is your Expected Family Contribution. The higher the EFC then the school feels you don't need as much assistance with paying for school.

Question: Principles of College Financial Aid?
Are scholarships and grants the safest way to receive financial aid? They do not require one to be in debt correct?
Do prestigious colleges and universities offer a good percentage of financial aid? Take Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton as examples.
Is it prudent to transfer money to other savings to lower income to increase financial aid?
What scholarships can be offered to undergraduate minorities who have high GPAs?
Answer: Yes, scholarships and grants are free money and don't ...
Yes, scholarships and grants are free money and don't have to be paid back, but the largest grant you can get from the government is a little over $4000 per year. You'll have to take out student loans or get scholarships to cover the rest.
If you get into an Ivy League school don't hesitate to take out student loans, they will be worth it!!
Question: Very serious financial aid problem. Please read.?
The university I plan to attend offers me a lot of financial aid, but family contribution is expected to be almost $9000. My mother has been unemployed for two years and now makes only $24,000 a year (she started working 2 months ago). Plus, she has bad credit and a lot of debt. She's a single mother and only provider. The school already chose financial aid so any college-funded or FAFSA related stuff is out. Where can I find a student loan to make up for the $9000 a year?
Do you know of any really good student/parent loans or loans in general for education and such? Any banks/etc?
Please help me. Please, you have no idea how urgent this is. I want to go to college more than anything, but I won't sacrifice mother's financial state as it is.
Thank you!

apply for a Stafford Guarenteed loan. The maximum each year is at least $5,000 for undergraduate work. The interest will not start to accrue until 6 months after you graduate, or later if you apply for a deferment, and the interest rates will be much lower than any loan your mother could qualify for.

Answer: You have a few options available to you, but you should not ...
You have a few options available to you, but you should not wait until you get the financial aid award letter if you have not received it yet. You could contact the school about the funding problem since your mother recently got employed once again after 2 years and is a single mother. Some will work with you on this. The other option is to apply for every scholarship you qualify for no matter the amount. I will include several different free methods to find college tuition money.
First, you go to your school's guidance office since they have a list of local scholarships. These are the easiest to get compared to the national ones.
Second, your local public library has a book listing college scholarships with some not even listed on the web.
Third, join several free membership scholarship search websites. You enter a profile and it will search for scholarships matching your profile. There is a scholarship for anything including wearing duct tape to the prom.
Finally, you could go for a Sallie Mae Signature Loan if all else fails.
